What is a mailing list?
A mailing list is a system that allows many people to send email to each other, simply by sending the email to
one specified address. There are thousands of mailing lists on the Internet. Milepost1 makes creating, running,
and subscribing to a mailing list easy.
Does it cost anything to subscribe to a mailing list?
Subscribing to a mail list at Milepost1 is FREE! You may subscribe to any mailing list that is public.
What is Milepost1 policy on SPAM?
Milepost1 has taken several measures to discourage spam, or unsolicited commercial email.
Part of the registration process involves responding to an email message that Milepost1 sends out. This is to ensure
that every list subscriber is using a valid email address and can therefore be held accountable if they spam. Only
subscribers to a list may send email to the list.
I never received the confirmation email
The most common cause of this is an incorrect email address.
I have stopped receiving emails
Are there emails being sent to the lists you are subscribed to? The first thing to do is to check the list archives
to see if there are messages that you have not received. It could be that no one has sent any email to the lists
lately.
I tried sending an email to a mailing list and it never showed up
This could be for several reasons. If the list is a restricted list, the list owner might not have approved your
subscription. If the list is a moderated list, the list owner might not have approved your email to be sent to
the list. If you send an email from an email address that is not the same as the one you provided when you registered,
the email will be ignored. This is to prevent spamming.
What are the different types of mailing lists that Milepost1 supports?
Milepost1 supports three types of mailing lists, moderated lists, restricted lists, and announcement lists. A moderated
mailing list is a list that requires the list owner to approve all emails before they are sent to the list. A restricted
mailing list is a list that requires the list owner to approve all subscription requests to the list. An announcement
mailing list is a list that does not allow anyone except the list owner to send emails to the list. If any of the
subscribers try to send email to the list, the emails are ignored.
How do I create a mailing list?
Start a list is easy with Milepost1. Simply select the "Start a List"
link on the left and follow the instructions.
What does the list owner do?
In general, the list owner is responsible for keeping the list interesting and on-topic. The list owner is also
responsible for promoting the mailing list. If the mailing list is moderated, the list owner must approve all emails
before they are sent to the list. If the mailing list is a restricted list, the list owner must approve all subscribers
before they can subscribe to the mailing list. If the mailing list is an announcement list, then the list owner
is the only person who can send email to the mailing list.
Can I add people to my list?
Yes! We provide the Add Users feature. The Add Users function directly subscribes people to your list.
How do I unsubscribe?
To unsubscribe from any lists you are on, or to change your subscription from normal to digest mode and back, click
on the List Center Button on the menu bar on the left. Options to change your email address to switch your subscription
from normal to digest mode and back, or to unsubscribe are all available on the Listserv
home screen.
Ok, I've subscribed to a list, now how to I send email to it?
To send email to the list you've subscribed to, send to the address listname@milepost1.com, where listname is the
name of the list you are subscribed to. So if you are subscribed to the joe_bob list, you would send email to joe_bob@milepost1.com
I'm a moderator, people have told me they've subscribed, but they don't show up.
This usually means that your subscribers have not replied to the confirmation email. Until they reply to the confirmation
email, they will not be subscribed to your list. Or they are using a different mailing address than they used to
subscribe.
I want to change the name that is displayed with all my email.
Milepost1 just uses the name that is sent with the email. So to change this, change the configuration of your email
software.
I started a list, and now I want to make someone else the moderator.
To do this, first add the person as a moderator, as outlined in the next question. Then, remove yourself as a moderator.
Can a list have more than one moderator.
Yes, Milepost1 supports multiple moderators.
I don't understand what the No Mail option is about.
The No Mail option is useful if you are going on vacation and don't want emails to pile up while you are gone.
By clicking on the Set No Mail link in the User Center, you will turn off mail delivery for that list. Mail will
not be saved while you are not receiving email.
How can I get in contact with the moderators for a list?
To send email to the moderators of a list, send the message to the address listname-owner@milepost1.com, where
listname is the name of the list.
Can someone subscribe without web access? What are your email commands?
Yes, people can subscribe through email. We support several commands:

How big can messages be?
Milepost1 limits messages to 500kb in size, to prevent mail bombs. If you require larger attachment let us know
and we can set the size larger for you.
